Kauai, The Garden Isle


The Hanalei River, Bay and distant Bali Hai
     
On the Island of Kauai flows from eastern slopes of Mount Waialeale for 17 miles (27km) until entering the pacific ocean as an estuary. It was designated and "American Heritage River" by US Presiden Bill Clinton on July 30, 1998.



The Waimea Canyon
 
Waimea Canyon is a large canyon approximately 10 miles (16km) long and up to 3,000 ft (900 m) deep located on the western side of Kauai. The canyon was formed by a deep incision of the Waimea river arising from extreme rainfall on the island's central peak, Mount Waialeale, the wettest spot on earth. It was formed not only by a steady process of erosion but also by a catastrophic collapse of the volcano that created Kauai.

Kilauea Lighthouse

The Kilauea Lighthouse began lighting the way for the mariners in 1913. It served as a pivotal navigation aid for ships sailing on the orient run. The historic light station consists of a concrete lighthouse, 3 field stone keepers' quarters, a fuel oil shed, cisterns and a supply of landing platform. It is one of the nation's most intact historic light stations.


Wailua River Falls

Wailua River Falls is an 83-foot waterfall thats feeds into the Wailua river. In ancient times, Hawaiian men would jump from the top of the falls to prove their manhood. The falls was featured on the opening credits of the TV show, Fantasy Island.
